What F3 Means

On the oven side of a Fisher & Paykel range, F3 is the excessive cavity temperature code: the cavity was sensed above 600°F (315°C) during normal cooking, well outside anything a bake or roast setting calls for. F&P's diagnosis for this platform is to test the temperature sensor and the oven elements, and to look at the power module only when neither of those accounts for it.

Common Causes of F3

  • A heating element stuck in the on position
  • A temperature sensor feeding the control board a falsely low reading
  • A power module no longer switching the element circuit off

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the range off at the breaker and leave the oven side unused. A cavity confirmed this far above its setting is not something to test by cooking in it again, and there is no owner-level check that separates the possible causes.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Leave the range off at the breaker until it has been diagnosed, because an element that stays energised at this temperature is a burn and fire risk rather than a performance complaint.
  • Element terminals remain live until the supply is fully isolated, so testing them on an energised range adds a shock risk to a heat one.
  • A drifting sensor and a stuck element produce the same code, and replacing the wrong one leaves a genuine runaway condition still in the appliance.
  • Reaching the sensor or the element means drawing the range out past its anti-tip bracket, which has to be re-engaged before the appliance is used again or it can tip when the door is loaded.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

F3 FAQ

Hotter than any normal cooking setting on the dial, and close to self-clean territory, which is why the control system stops rather than carrying on.

It may clear the display, but the element, sensor or module behind it is unchanged, so the condition returns as soon as the oven is used.

Ask the technician rather than assuming. On a range the two halves share a control board and supply, so a problem reported on the oven side is not automatically confined to it.
