Finishing a self-clean cycle only to find the door won’t open is one of the more alarming things an oven can do, but in the majority of cases it’s expected behavior rather than a fault. Here’s what’s normal, and when it stops being normal.
Why the Lock Stays Engaged
Self-clean cycles push cavity temperatures well above what’s safe to expose skin to, so the control system keeps the door locked deliberately until it’s confirmed the interior has cooled to a safe range — even after the display says the cycle is finished.
Don’t Try to Speed It Up
Prying at the door or forcing the handle while the cavity is still hot risks both a burn and damage to the latch hardware itself, which can turn a normal wait into an actual repair.
How Long Is Normal?
Depending on how hot the cycle ran and your kitchen’s ambient temperature, a full cooldown and unlock can take close to an hour past when the cycle indicator reads complete. That’s within the range of normal.
Still Locked After That?
Cut power at the breaker for a few minutes and restore it — this clears a portion of lingering lockouts on its own.
