What Fault 17 Means
Fault 17 is the freezer-side equivalent of Fault 15: the FC fan is drawing less current than the module expects, which F&P records as open-circuit wiring or a failed fan. On the freezer side the consequence shows up faster, because without moving air the evaporator loads up with frost.
Common Causes of Fault 17
- The freezer fan motor has failed
- Broken or disconnected fan wiring inside the compartment
- A blade jammed against accumulated frost
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Open the freezer and look at the rear wall or vent grille for frost that is noticeably heavier than usual. Heavy, uneven frost alongside a silent fan is the classic picture, though confirming it is still a technician's job.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Unplug the refrigerator before any interior panel is removed, because the same harness carries the mains supply to the defrost heater.
- Frost around a fan can be the cause of the stall or the result of it, and clearing it without establishing which leaves you back here in a fortnight.
- Freezer-compartment plastics become brittle at working temperature and the mouldings holding the fan shroud snap rather than flex when levered cold.
- A replacement fan fitted the wrong way round in its duct moves air against the designed path and cools the compartment worse than no fan at all.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
