What 36 Means
Fault 36 is logged when the control module has had to top the water level up more than four times during agitate. F&P explains the reasoning plainly: one or two top-ups are normal as air escapes from a full load, but more than four means water is going somewhere it should not - either siphoning out through the drain or leaking from the machine.
Common Causes of 36
- A drain hose outlet set outside the specified height range, causing siphoning
- A hose guide missing or pushed too far into the standpipe
- A genuine leak at the pressure tube, drive shaft seal, or pump housing seal
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Look at where your drain hose ends. F&P specifies a minimum outlet height of 850mm and a maximum of 1200mm, and a hose pushed too far down a standpipe siphons the drum empty while the machine keeps refilling it.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Unplug the machine and shut the taps before looking underneath, because a leak of unknown origin plus a live appliance is the wrong combination.
- Siphoning and a real leak both produce this code, and the cheap fix for one is useless against the other.
- The drive shaft seal is what keeps water out of the bearings, and a machine left leaking there turns a seal job into a bearing job.
- Water tracking under adjacent cabinetry or flooring does far more damage over a week than the original problem ever would.
