What 40 Means
Fault 40 concerns the clutch that connects the drive to the basket. During a basket check the module found the basket not engaged even with the pressure sensor showing empty, and it kept checking for two minutes before declaring the problem. F&P's causes start with clothes or foreign objects preventing the clutch re-engaging, and with excessive suds stopping the basket rotating.
Common Causes of 40
- A garment or foreign object jammed around the clutch or agitator
- Excessive suds preventing the basket turning
- A worn clutch or damaged spline drive
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Take the load out and look under the agitator skirt for a sock, an underwire, or a stray child's item. Then run a rinse and spin with the drum empty - if it engages cleanly, the load or the suds were the problem.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Unplug the machine before reaching down past the agitator, because the drive is directly below and an unexpected start is not something to be near.
- Pulling hard at a garment wrapped into the clutch tears the spline teeth, which converts a retrieval job into a clutch rebuild.
- Excessive suds and a failing clutch present identically, and only running the machine empty separates them.
- Reassembling the clutch out of alignment leaves the basket engaging intermittently, which is harder to diagnose than a clean failure.
