What 54 (SmartDrive) Means

Fault 54 also covers phases 2 to 6 and is the companion to Fault 53. Here the motor failed to step into the correct position and no current was detected at all, which F&P reads as either a missing motor connection or a failed motor drive in the module.

Common Causes of 54 (SmartDrive)

  • A motor harness connector not fitted or fallen off
  • A break in the motor harness
  • A failed motor drive stage in the control module

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Unplug the machine and check nothing has been disturbed behind it, particularly if the washer has recently been moved. A connector knocked off the stator produces exactly this no-current result.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Unplug the machine before the motor harness is touched, since those connections carry the full drive current.
  • No current means no drive, so the machine will not agitate or spin, and repeatedly pressing start achieves nothing.
  • Continuity has to be checked with the connectors parted and the machine dead, not by looking at a plug that appears to be in.
  • Harness pins on this platform spread with age, and one refitted without being checked gives an intermittent problem that costs more to find than the original.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

54 (SmartDrive) FAQ

In 53 the motor moved but in the wrong direction; in 54 nothing happened at all and no current flowed, which points at the connection or the drive rather than the position sensor.

It can. Connectors that have been in place for years do not always survive the flexing of a machine being pulled out and pushed back.
