What 38 Means

Fault 38 is logged when the module detects and records an empty water level while the machine is agitating - a reading that cannot be true, since agitation only happens with the drum filled. F&P's primary action is to check that the pressure tube is attached and has not been cut, and to replace the motor control module only if the tube shows no sign of problem.

Common Causes of 38

  • A pressure tube cut, split, or pulled off its spigot
  • A tube kinked or trapped where it runs behind the tub
  • A sensing circuit inside the motor control module that has failed

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Unplug the machine and trace the thin pressure tube from the base of the tub, checking it is pushed fully onto its spigots at both ends and has not been nicked, kinked, or trapped behind the cabinet.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Unplug the washer before reaching behind the tub, since the module the tube connects to carries the mains supply.
  • On this platform the transducer lives inside the motor control module, so a misdiagnosis here means replacing the most expensive part in the machine to cure a length of plastic pipe.
  • A tube that looks connected can still be split close to the spigot, which only shows once it is removed and inspected.
  • Pushing a hardened tube back onto its spigot splits it further, and tube is not a part most owners can source on a platform this old.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

38 FAQ

A thin air tube from the bottom of the tub to the level sensor. Rising water compresses the air inside it, and that pressure is how the machine measures the level without a float.

It fits. If the module believes the tub is empty it cannot fill to the right level, so the load ends up washing in far less water than the program intended.
