What 54 (SmartDrive) Means
Fault 54 also covers phases 2 to 6 and is the companion to Fault 53. Here the motor failed to step into the correct position and no current was detected at all, which F&P reads as either a missing motor connection or a failed motor drive in the module.
Common Causes of 54 (SmartDrive)
- A motor harness connector not fitted or fallen off
- A break in the motor harness
- A failed motor drive stage in the control module
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Unplug the machine and check nothing has been disturbed behind it, particularly if the washer has recently been moved. A connector knocked off the stator produces exactly this no-current result.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Unplug the machine before the motor harness is touched, since those connections carry the full drive current.
- No current means no drive, so the machine will not agitate or spin, and repeatedly pressing start achieves nothing.
- Continuity has to be checked with the connectors parted and the machine dead, not by looking at a plug that appears to be in.
- Harness pins on this platform spread with age, and one refitted without being checked gives an intermittent problem that costs more to find than the original.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
