What U4 Means
U4 means water filled too quickly, or the tub failed to drain. Both amount to the same thing from the controller's point of view: the water level moved in a way the cycle did not ask for, so the cycle is held. F&P lists motor failure, rotor problems, incomplete draining and excess supply pressure among the causes.
Common Causes of U4
- A blocked filter or drain path leaving water in the tub
- A wash motor or rotor problem preventing a proper pump-out
- Incoming water pressure high enough to overfill the tub faster than expected
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Lift out the filter plate and clear whatever has collected under it, then check the drain hose behind the cabinet for a kink or a high loop. A restricted drain is the most common reason a tub fails to empty in time.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Shut the water off at the supply valve before anything behind the cabinet is disturbed, then switch the drawer off at the breaker.
- Standing water hides how much of the drain path is actually blocked, and bailing it out by hand tends to push debris further down the hose.
- A drawer that will not drain and a drawer that fills too fast need completely different repairs, and the code alone does not separate them.
- Getting at the pump means lifting the drawer off its runners, which are thin enough to bend under its weight and then bind on every opening afterwards.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
