What Fault 6 Means

Fault 6 is the opposite electrical failure to Fault 5 on the same freezer-compartment sensor: resistance has collapsed below 660 ohms. F&P documents that as a short, usually where two conductors have been bridged by moisture or by insulation that has worn through, rather than as a genuinely extreme temperature.

Common Causes of Fault 6

  • Water tracking into the sensor connector and bridging its pins
  • Chafed insulation letting the two sensor conductors touch
  • A thermistor that has failed short rather than open

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Leave the diagnosis alone, but do check whether the cabinet has recently been defrosted by hand, moved, or had anything dropped behind it, since all three are common precursors to a shorted sensor lead and are worth mentioning when you book.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Pull the plug first: a shorted low-voltage circuit can still sit alongside live wiring inside the same loom, and a slipped probe there is how people get hurt.
  • A short at the connector and a short in the thermistor behave identically on the display, and only one of them is fixed by a new sensor.
  • Drying out a damp connector without finding where the water came in leaves the same error to return on the next humid week.
  • The power module lives behind a cover that has to come off and go back with its seal intact, otherwise the next condensation event lands on the board itself.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Fault 6 FAQ

It is a plausible route, yes - water finding its way into a sensor connector is one of the recognized causes of a short-circuit reading, though a technician still has to confirm it rather than assume.

Within a few days. It is not a hazard, but a compartment being run from a bad reading is not a compartment you should trust with a freezer full of food.
