What Fault 23 Means

Fault 23 is raised on the same second PC probe when its resistance falls under 660 ohms. F&P annotates that as the sensor reading hot, which in practice means the circuit has shorted somewhere and is presenting the control system with a temperature the compartment has never seen.

Common Causes of Fault 23

  • Water in the probe connector joining its two pins
  • Insulation worn through where the lead crosses a bracket
  • A probe that has failed to a short internally

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Leave it to a technician, but do mention any recent water spill, hand defrost, or move of the appliance, since a shorted probe circuit usually has a physical cause somebody can point to.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Isolate the cabinet at the outlet first - the loom carrying this probe shares its route with mains wiring and the two are not obvious apart.
  • A falsely hot reading makes the control system cool that zone hard, so leaving it running risks freezing whatever is stored there.
  • Drying a wet connector is not a repair unless the path the water took has been found and closed off.
  • These connector shells grip by a plastic latch that goes brittle in the cold, and a latch broken on removal will not hold the plug seated afterwards.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

Fault 23 FAQ

Very likely. A shorted probe reads hot, and a control system told a zone is hot responds by cooling it much harder than it should.

Same probe, opposite failure: 22 is an open circuit reading cold, 23 is a short reading hot, and the wiring check that goes with each is different.
