What 56 Means
Fault 56 is raised when the machine carried out a basket check and could not determine a valid basket status at all - it could establish neither that the basket was engaged nor that it was free. F&P's actions cover load distribution, the mechanical parts, and the clutch function.
Common Causes of 56
- A badly distributed or tangled load
- A clutch that is engaging only partially
- Wear in the mechanical parts the basket check relies on
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Redistribute the load by hand so it is spread evenly around the drum rather than bunched on one side, then run a rinse and spin. An unbalanced or tangled load is a genuine cause of an inconclusive basket check.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Unplug the machine before anything below the agitator is investigated, since the drive sits directly underneath it.
- An inconclusive result is not the same as a failure, and treating it as a dead clutch leads to a part that was not needed.
- Repeated attempts to spin an unbalanced load hammer the suspension, which is a slow and expensive way to create a second problem.
- The clutch on this platform is a serviceable assembly rather than a sealed one, and reassembled out of adjustment it produces intermittent problems that are hard to pin down.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
