What 144 (SmartDrive) Means
Fault 144 is a software trap on Phase 1 machines - the motor control module's program reached a state it was written to catch rather than continue from. F&P describes it simply as the module having developed a problem, and gives a three-step response: power off for five seconds, check the connections between the two modules, then replace the motor control module.
Common Causes of 144 (SmartDrive)
- A transient condition that put the module's program into a trapped state
- A poor connection between the display and motor control modules
- A developing hardware problem on the motor control module
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Do the documented first step. Switch off at the wall, count five seconds, switch back on and try the cycle again. A trap triggered once by a transient clears exactly there.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If the reset does not hold, unplug the machine before the connections between the modules are inspected, since that harness runs with the mains feed.
- F&P puts the inter-module connections ahead of replacement, so going straight to a board skips the cheaper of the two outcomes.
- A trap that recurs at a particular point in the cycle is telling you something about when it happens, and repeated resets destroy that pattern.
- Phase 1 parts are the oldest on this platform, which makes a board fitted on a guess unlikely to be returnable.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
