What 48 Means
Fault 48 is raised when voltages read from the valve diagnostic circuit indicate that both the hot and the cold inlet valve coils are failing at once. Two coils rarely fail together, which is why F&P's first check is the harness rather than the valves: a connector off, or pins bent, takes both out at the same moment.
Common Causes of 48
- A valve harness not correctly fastened, or pins bent in the connector
- Both valve coils open circuit
- A problem in the module's valve diagnostic circuit
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
With the machine unplugged, look at the valve harness where it plugs onto the valve assembly and make sure it is fully home and square. A connector that has been disturbed is the likeliest explanation for a both-valves problem.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Shut both taps and unplug the machine before the valve area is touched, because these are mains-powered solenoids sitting on live water connections.
- Two coils failing together is improbable, so replacing valves before checking the harness is money spent in the wrong order.
- Inlet hose connections seal on a washer that hardens with age, and one re-made on the old washer weeps behind the machine where it is not seen.
- The diagnostic circuit that produced this reading lives on the module, so a module problem can condemn two perfectly good coils.
